Here at Memphis Mold Inspector we see various types of mold situations. Many of our clients have no idea they have been housing a mold family of their own. It is important to understand that our enemy mold needs moisture to propagate and be viable. To avoid this shock and surprise, we’ve compiled a few common sense solutions – often overlooked. If these simple steps are followed in your day to day, mold growth will be greatly inhibited.
- Water indoor plants in a sink, or outdoors if possible. Avoid an excessive amount of indoor plants.
- Wipe down bathroom walls, shower, tub, vanities and sink tops after use. There are some good products out there for this very purpose. (Refer to our previous posted blog for a list of tools: http://memphismoldinspector.com/helpful-tools-to-battle-mold/)
- Try and avoid air drying dishes and clothes indoors.
- Always wipe down floors and counters as soon as possible after any water spillage.
- Securely close shower doors when showering and leave these doors open after use.
- Wipe down any and all visible signs of moisture including condensation on windows and sills.
- Make sure to not overlook checking the HVAC vents for moisture beads, especially during the summer air conditioning season.
- Regularly empty dehumidifier reservoir and refrigerator condensation pan where applicable. If possible, pour a small amount if bleach in the refrigerator pan and dehumidifier to decrease the potential for mold growth.
- Remove any moldy or rotting food and take out the garbage regularly.
And finally, answer this question on a consistent basis: “If I were mold and needed moisture to survive, where would I feel most comfortable to set up a home and build a family?’
All items listed above will not only help you prevent the unwanted mold from staking a claim on your home, but will also eliminate other potential germs that could lead to illnesses.
